Definitions
In this experimental research there are two terms need to be defined
operationally, there are:
1.1.1
Communicative Approach
According to Tomlinson (1987: 1) communicative approach is any
approach to classroom teaching and learning which put the emphasis in improving
the learners ability to communicate in language via motivating activities
involving exposure and use in other word, An approach in which the learners are
asked to use English in meaningful and purposeful way,
In this research, the writer applies the communicative approach is
to give a chance to the student to interact effectively by using meaningful and
purposeful way on vocabulary achievement.
1.1.2 Vocabulary Achievement
Vocabulary means the total number of word which (which of rule of
combining them) make up a language Horn by, (1995: 1331). Meanwhile according
to Horn by (1995: 110) achievement is something done successfully with effort
and skill, so it means that achievement is a result of the performance of the
student on what has been taught and learn by individual, which make up
language.
In this research, vocabulary
achievement is the ability of the students to achieve a wide range of words
which has been learnt caused by the process of teaching learning by using an
approach.
1.2 The Significances of the Research
The result of this experimental research are expected to give
contribution are theoretically and practically.
1.2.1
Theoretically
Theoretically it gives information to the English teacher about the
effect of communicative approach; it can make some consideration to teaching
English especially in teaching vocabulary
1.5.2
Practically
The result of the research can be used to get the student vocabulary
achievement. It can improve the motivation in learning teaching process.
1.3 The Scope and Limitation of the Research
The scope of this research concludes two variable, namely
communicative approach and vocabulary achievement. Communicative approach is limited by
characteristic of communicative approach, principle of communicative approach,
the role of the teacher, and the role of the student. Vocabulary achievement is
limited by noun, adjective and adverb.
The limitation of the research is on the eight grade student SMP Negeri
01 Balung in academic year 2012/2013
